Clift Farm: Defining Madison, AL from 1858 to Today

Clift Farm: Defining Madison, AL from 1858 to Today

Sep 2, 2021

Stone Martin Builders is proud to be part of the re-imagined Clift Farm, a century-old farm that helped shape Madison, AL in the mid-1800s, and today is at the forefront of defining the city once again. Today’s Clift Farm is a southern-style, mixed-use community with a wide variety of housing, retail, recreation, and workplace opportunities.

It is the history of this land and the spirit of its caretakers that make it truly special, and the Clift Farm development team has prioritized preserving these elements through careful planning and thoughtful decisions. This land brought joy to generations of Clift children with its idyllic green spaces, calm lakes, crystal creeks, and beautiful blue skies. Now, many more future generations of Alabamans can enjoy and cherish it. Here's the fascinating timeline of Clift Farm, from 1821 to today.

1821: On September 5th, John Henry Clift is born in Wales, England.

1858: John Henry begins purchasing land in Madison, Alabama after moving with his wife, Sallie Carothers. They begin farming cotton.

1898: John Henry’s son, John Thomas Clift, inherits the land, now called the Homeplace. John Thomas also passes away this year and his children (Frank, Florence, Josephine Maude, and Thomas W. Clift) inherit the Homeplace.

1958-1959: Frank Clift passes away on June 6, 1958 and leaves his share to Jack Clift, which he inherits on August 31, 1959. Jack Clift would buy the other shares of the Homeplace from various family members and be the steward of the land for the next 59 years.

1990: On November 12th, Jack Thomas Clift is awarded the Alabama Century Farm distinction. A Century Farm is one that has been in the same family for at least 100 years and has some agricultural activities on the farm.

2018:Jack T. Clift and his family celebrate the groundbreaking of the Clift Farm development.

Today, Clift Farm is living up to its legacy as a place for families to gather, make lasting memories, and live happy, prosperous lives. This new home community in Madison, AL will feature housing options for every lifestyle, including townhouses, cottage houses, condominiums, single family, estate houses, and multi-family homes with high-end finishes.

The beauty of the land has been preserved with miles of nature trails surrounded by orchards. The farm's sense of community is also intact with a welcoming clubhouse, sparkling pool, exercise gym, and a retail village anchored by Publix, restaurants, event spaces, and workplaces. Clift Farm at the turn of the century was the cornerstone of Madison, and today it once again plays an important role in the joy and prosperity of North Alabama.
